Learning to Drink

Scorpion Cup

Trying to recreate the shot in the book

A little gimmicky, but I was really looking forward to making this one. 🙂 Luckily we could buy tiki glasses individually so we didn’t have to get a full dozen. We got 4 because what if a few people come over and everybody wants a scorpion cup? These are BIG glasses so I’ve actually been eating yogurt out of them. 😛

This drink is a little higher-maintenance than I like, what with fruit juice + two liquors + three other flavor things, including orgeat syrup which is almond syrup. And according to America’s Test Kitchen it’s pronounced or-gha. Cuz it’s French.

America’s Test Kitchen also recommends you make your own. “I’ve never even heard of this orgeat shit” she muttered to herself as she squeezed each individual almond out of its skin one by one, prior to toasting. Then you gotta put ’em in a food processor and let ’em sit in simple syrup overnight. The result is delicious (if you like almond, which I do) but wow what a pain. HOWEVER, even having never tasted store-bought ~orgeat~, I have to imagine the homemade is better. Commercial almond products tend to have that almond extract-y taste.

I didn’t make the grenadine because…come on. Give me a break here. I can’t do it all.

We wanted to do the flaming shot in the lime cup but our lime kept splitting. So we did the umbrella instead. We’ll try the shot next time.

The drink itself was good—I couldn’t really detect my precious orgeat but I’m sure it was a critical part of the overall flavor profile. Actually, you couldn’t detect any booze at all, so this drink is probably dangerous.
